O'er green ground, velvet carpeted, rode he, 'pon his steed, toward the sun and brighter
days.
Brilliant light through yon cloud is breaking, all blinding, bathing, burning
away the older days.
T'was she, his lady, of the golden sun.
She, his lady, of light and dark.
And as he rode, armour gleaming, pennant snapping in summer breezes, heavens light
'pon his visor shining,
Filled his eyes with loving feeling.
Thus he rode, and thus
he loved, 'pon the road that leads e'er onwards,
Ne'er a thought for rocky footstep
nor any thought for uneven byway, the road led straight and plain and true,
Till
it led unto his love.
She who shines like heaven burning
She, his lady, of light and dark.
And like unto those knights so noble, as like those, he, as into a mirror peered,
Like peerless Lancelot, on he rode, search eternal for his Guinevere.
I'to the sun, he rode t'ward her -
I'to the sun, he rose to hold her -
Taking her hand,
soft and gentle,
Tender her touch to skin of metal
He held her close within the sun.
She who shines with heaven's glory,
She, his lady, of light and dark.
And in the nighted shadowed forest
They two did walk and talk and laugh thereafter,
whispering words that none shalt know.
For in the dark the light is brighter and his
heart did soar to hear her laughter.
Close and quiet within his heart.
She, his lady, of the light and dark.
She, his lady, of the light and dark.
Part II
High above rooftops drafty, sat she, sowed she hopes of parting
Ere each night had turned to daylight, yet, with each returning sunbeam,
Her shadow roamed ‘pon the floor.
And ere her hopes had turned to actions each new day brought new distractions
Tied her to a mem’ry fading, her heart grew sore with love forlorn,
Thus, her lonely, hopeful vigil sworn.
‘For t’is my hope, my Fate, one day, that I should meet a knight so brave’
This she whisper’d, such words of love, this she whisper’d to the sky above
That Chance and Fate would blush to know all the thoughts within her soul.
And here she stood and here she sat, all the while marking time
‘Til, at last, the seasons turned and winters passed within their terms,
Spring broke forth, leafing trees, flow’ring each and ev’ry bush
‘Til the world again had turned from winter grey to velvet green.
Saw she, then, he that rode ‘pon the winding, snaking road
A knight, in armour, ‘pon his steed, with noble pennant snapping i’the breeze
‘He’, she said, unto her heart, ‘he is the one I have seen in dreams.
And like not my sister, of Shallot, I shall not fear to see Lancelot.
Damn this loom and damn the weave, this dreary tower I will leave.’
And as she watched he looked her way, his eyes caught her’s and there they stayed
A goodly time thus pass’d before each looked away, to look once more.
‘Pon the crumbl’d battlements, ‘mid the ancient ivy vines she stood,
She looked at him as he rode her way. He looked at her in the sunbeams bright
And steer’d his course toward her light.
This knight, a knight to end all nights
This knight who rode in gleaming bright
This knight who holds her in his sight
He, her knight, of the dark and light
The road, and steed, and knight and love, filled her mind with wand’ring call
Filled her mind with wond’rous glory, he, the same, was o’ercome.
And he to her thus found his way, he to her did love proclaim
And she to he did answer such.
What God made flesh came from dust,
Dried and formed within His hand, to shape and mould this Eden Man.
And who He thought should have a mate, created He then a woman’s shape.
Thus, and thus, the two they met and shared Love’s whispers in bowers shaded
And walk’d ‘pon carpets of dewy grasses, cool and pleasant ‘mid the branches.
Knight and Lady, she and he, each had walk’d their own and lonely trails,
And mirrors lie when we do seek within to match the image on its glassy skin.
Yet each had spied, within the mirror crack’d, a better echo of what should be
For when dream and desire and heart and hope break the bonds of surly Doubt
Then do the lies of time fall back, and true Life and Love then know no lack.
