The Sabbat

I stood and watched as the people drank

And danced round fires singing a magic chant.

I stood apart, numb with fear,

As the church bell rang, the hour drew near.

And all the while the woman smiled

And the old man stared through shadowed eyes

As the sky began to darken.

A cup was pressed up to my lips, a liquid thick and red as blood

And as the fires roared and grew, to my horror I began to drink.

I joined the people round the fire and started dancing and to sing

As time passed by - a creeping thing.

And all the while the woman smiled

And the old man stared through shadowed eyes

As the sky continued to darken.

A girl, tied to the alter stone, a black carved dagger raised up high

As the dancing people watched, the dagger came down and stopped her cry.

And her crimson blood spilled on the ground,

The watchers watched without a sound.

And all the while the woman smiled

And the old man stared through shadowed eyes

As the air began to thicken.

Upon the stone a form did grow

The shape of a man amid the smoke.

With claws on hands and cloven hoof

He watched the watchers fall to the ground.

And all the while the woman smiled

And the old man stared through shadowed eyes

As the Devil attends this place tonight.

The old man spoke with words of power

As the church bell tolled the midnight hour.

And the Devil looked at the woman who smiled

And stole her mind as the old man babbled.

So now all the while the woman smiles

And the old man stares with wild eyes.

And the Devil? He laughed and vanished.
